Sumantra Mukherjee is an independent Indian artist and illustrator who graduated from Kolkata's Government College of Art and Craft in 2005. Rooted deeply in draughtsmanship, his creative practice spans diverse forms, including street murals, sculptures, drawings, and children's graphic novels. He creates vibrant, whimsical, and intentionally chaotic imagery that mirrors the stark contrasts of modern Indian life. By focusing on everyday local experiences, his art directly engages the general public rather than just traditional gallery audiences.
His career features several significant solo exhibitions and interactive community projects. He debuted his solo work with "Cloud 9" in 2009, followed by "NORMAL" during a 2015 residency in Rotterdam. His 2018 exhibition, "Chiriya Chug Gayi Cake," uniquely combined visual art with performances by Kolkata hip-hop artists to explore the shared struggles and dreams of ordinary people.
Lately, Mukherjee has focused heavily on societal challenges and public advocacy. His 2021–2022 project, "Mass-Q-Line," used public posters to challenge conventional gender expectations and masculinity. He also created an impactful visual installation at the 2019 Kolkata LGBTQIA+ film festival to protest social surveillance. Through these varied efforts, he uses accessible, temporary mediums to foster deep community connections.
