About Sujit Karmakar

Sujit Karmakar (born February 6, 1982, Kolkata) is a celebrated Indian modern contemporary artist known for his vibrant Pop Art-influenced paintings that capture the rhythm, movement, and emotional pulse of urban life. His work holds growing relevance among contemporary artists in Chandigarh, appealing to collectors and audiences drawn to bold, layered, and expressive contemporary practices.

Karmakar earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the College of Visual Arts, Khairagarh University in 2005. His artistic approach is deeply shaped by his philosophy of life as a continuous cycle—much like a wheel in constant motion. This belief strongly informs his visual language, where change, renewal, and resilience are recurring themes. His dynamic use of acrylic paint reflects the energy of city spaces and the ever-evolving nature of modern life, making his work well-suited to curated art collections in Chandigarh and other metropolitan centers.

Urban life serves as a central subject in Sujit Karmakar’s paintings. His themes often revolve around cityscapes, childhood, and human emotions, with a particular focus on the female form as a symbol of sensitivity, strength, and lived experience. Blending abstract, contemporary, and figurative elements, his compositions stand out for their vibrant color palettes, layered textures, and carefully balanced forms, hallmarks of his distinctive modern contemporary style.

Karmakar’s artistic excellence has been recognized widely across India. He received the “Best Exhibit” award for Watercolor Painting from St. Xavier’s College in 2002, demonstrating his promise early in his career. He has held several solo exhibitions, including his first at Taj Bengal, Kolkata, in 2008, followed by a solo show at the Ahuja Museum for Art in 2010. Additionally, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions and prominent art exhibitions in Chandigarh, as well as at leading institutions such as the Academy of Fine Arts, Rajya Charukala Parishad, and Birla Academy.

His works have also been showcased at major art fairs and exhibitions in cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, along with international platforms such as Dubai. These exhibitions have contributed to the inclusion of his works in significant private and institutional art collections in Chandigarh and beyond.

Renowned for refined finishing, strong composition, and expressive brushwork, Sujit Karmakar’s paintings convey the beauty and momentum of life in motion. His commitment to capturing the vibrancy of contemporary existence positions him as a respected voice among modern contemporary artists, offering visually compelling and emotionally resonant works for today’s evolving art landscape.
