Kishore Kumar is a versatile contemporary Indian artist whose creative journey represents a fascinating evolution from the literal beauty of the natural world to the abstract architecture of human memory. Born in 1978 in Bhilai, Kishore received his formal art education at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Painting.
For much of his career, Kishore was celebrated for his meticulous depictions of flora and fauna. In acclaimed series like The Enchanted Forest, he utilized vibrant yet harmonious colors to highlight the majesty of the environment, driven by a deep-seated belief that nature is the foundation of human existence. These early works were characterized by a high level of detail and a serene, meditative quality that encouraged viewers to reconnect with the earth.
In recent years, Kishore’s practice has undergone a profound conceptual shift with his series, The Architecture of Memories. Moving away from traditional landscapes, he now uses tactile materials, including vintage sarees, family textiles, embroidery fragments, and thread to construct complex, geometric compositions. These works resemble city maps, windows, and architectural blueprints, where each piece of fabric acts as a vessel for personal history and past relationships.
Inspired by the rhythmic patterns and repetitions found in bustling local bazaars and ration shops, Kishore creates layered surfaces that function like palimpsests. His art has transitioned from a narrative of nature to a material-driven exploration of "in-betweenness," where texture replaces traditional storytelling.
