Yashwant Deshmukh is a prominent contemporary Indian painter born in the Akola district of Maharashtra in 1963. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1988.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Yashwant appreciates the transparency of the medium, which allows the raw canvas surface to show through the permanent layers of paint. His signature palette relies heavily on gray tones rather than fresh colors, a deliberate choice intended to capture a sense of stillness, lack of motion, and quiet space. He frequently integrates ordinary, everyday objects like buckets and funnels into his canvases. Rather than mere decorations, he views these floating objects as individual protagonists used to investigate the deeper metaphysics of form and negative space.
Yashwant has achieved significant career milestones, including winning the Bendre-Husain Scholarship in 1993 and receiving an invitation to the third Bose Pacia Modern Biennial in New York in 2001. He has held major solo exhibitions at prestigious venues like Mumbai's Jehangir Art Gallery and has participated in international group shows across Tokyo, Bangkok, and various Indian cities. He currently lives and works in Mumbai.
