Throngkiuba Yimchungru is a contemporary painter based in Kolkata who works closely with the Adivasi Art Trust in London. He developed his technical skills through a bachelor's degree at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, followed by postgraduate studies at Shantiniketan's celebrated Kala Bhavan.
His portfolio addresses the harsh realities of ecological decline caused by human progress. To connect modern development with environmental chaos, he builds up his canvases using home-building materials like wall putty, primers, and enamel paint. He then subjects these surfaces to a physical artistic process that mimics human destruction. Using soldering irons to burn the materials and chisels to rip into the layers, his technique directly mirrors the trauma of forest fires and aggressive open-cast mining.
This distinctive approach has brought his work to major cultural hubs globally, with exhibitions in cities like New York, San Francisco, Colombo, and at London's Tate Modern. His contributions have earned him several honors, including the abstract category of the ArtSlant Prize and the Indian Government's Young Artist Award, alongside a funded fellowship in Germany.
