Samir Mohanty (born 1989, Jajpur, Odisha) is an Indian modern contemporary artist whose practice thoughtfully explores themes of memory, absence, and the passage of time. His work holds strong relevance within the discourse of contemporary artists in Chandigarh, engaging audiences who seek introspective and concept-driven contemporary art.
Mohanty completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Utkal University of Culture, Bhubaneswar in 2009, followed by a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting from Hyderabad Central University in 2012. His academic grounding and conceptual clarity allow his artworks to examine the relationship between past experiences and present realities, encouraging viewers to reflect on life’s deeper meanings.
A distinctive aspect of Samir Mohanty’s practice is his use of natural materials such as twigs, bark, and thorns. These organic elements act as emotional and symbolic connectors, reflecting his belief that Mother Nature provides everything essential for human existence. His preference for vibrant colors represents joy, renewal, and emotional vitality, while nature’s calming presence serves as a continuous source of inspiration. This approach aligns his work with collectors interested in meaningful art collections in Chandigarh that engage with ecology, memory, and human experience.
Nature is not merely a subject in Mohanty’s work; it is the central protagonist. His art explores the profound bond between human beings and the natural environment, emphasizing the fragile balance that sustains life. Drawing from personal roots, nostalgia, and indigenous perspectives, his work reflects both psychological and physical dimensions of human growth. The materials themselves carry equal importance to form and image, conveying ideas of symbiosis, science, and spirituality.
Beyond painting, Samir Mohanty actively experiments with installations and sculptures, expanding his visual language through varied materials and spatial experiences. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions across India and abroad, including significant art exhibitions in Chandigarh, contributing to a wider contemporary art dialogue. His practice has been recognized with the prestigious Elizabeth Green Shields Foundation Canada Grant, awarded twice in 2008 and 2010.
Samir Mohanty’s art invites viewers into a contemplative space, encouraging reflection on time, memory, and the interconnectedness of life. Through his sensitive use of natural materials and conceptual depth, his work resonates with audiences seeking thoughtful contemporary practices and meaningful engagement with modern contemporary artists and evolving art collections in Chandigarh.
