Rabin Mondal (1932–2019) remains a deeply influential voice in modern Indian art, renowned for capturing the raw intensity of human struggle. Raised in the industrial landscape of Howrah near Kolkata, he witnessed firsthand the sharp contrast between extreme poverty and wealth, alongside frequent social unrest. Combined with a painful childhood injury that fostered a quiet solitude, these formative experiences anchored his work in themes of anguish, resilience, and survival.

Mondal honed his craft at the Vidyasagar Art School. Early influences included Jamini Roy and Rabindranath Tagore, but exposure to a landmark exhibition of French modernists introduced him to global avant-garde techniques. This fusion led to his distinctive, highly expressive style characterized by heavy impasto, rugged line work, and a dramatic palette dominated by thick blacks and fiery reds.
