Born in 1969 in Kolkata, Pintu Paul is a self-taught artist whose creative journey bypasses formal academic training. Instead, his artistic sensitivities were nurtured by a rich family heritage. His grandfather crafted religious sculptures as a traditional potter, while his father, Phani Bhushan Paul, worked as a jewelry designer. This lineage instilled a natural rhythm and deep aesthetic understanding in him from an early age. Seeking further direction, he later connected with Samar N. Bhowmik, a celebrated painter of the neo-Indian style, who mentored his passion and helped refine his vision.
Since hosting his debut solo exhibition in 2003, Paul has continuously evolved his craft, arriving at a highly distinctive and contemplative style. His current artwork beautifully merges diverse cultural influences. He seamlessly blends the flowing, poetic lines of regional folk art with the reflective, spiritual depth of classical Indian traditions. Furthermore, he incorporates Western modernist concepts, reshaping realistic human anatomy into simplified, expressionist figures. Through this unique combination of local roots and global styles, Paul delivers a cheerful, lighthearted, and colorful celebration of daily life, ensuring that his traditional cultural identity remains the primary focus of his visual storytelling.
