About Mrinal Dey
Mrinal Dey, born in 1979 in West Bengal, India, is an artist who completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting from Indira Kala Sangeet University, Chhattisgarh, in 2005 and 2007, both with first-class honors. He currently works as a full-time artist in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Dey's artwork mainly features large, exaggerated figures that dominate the canvas. His use of bright colors reflects the folk painting style of his native region. The central figures in his paintings often appear oversized and confined within small spaces, symbolizing the restrictions and pressures of modern society. These figures are not idealized but rather grotesque and distorted, with features like slit eyes, bulbous noses, and exaggerated bodies. They represent the effects of consumerism, overconsumption, and the loneliness it brings.
Dey's art also carries a surrealist quality, where elements from dreams seem to flow through his paintings. His figures often stare coldly at the viewer, creating a feeling of both awe and discomfort. He incorporates symbols like barcodes and packaging materials, such as newsprints and brown-paper boxes, to comment on how people and objects, including art itself, are commodified in contemporary society. These symbols emphasize the loss of innocence and the impact of media and consumer culture on modern life.
Dey believes that art should have a specific viewpoint and cannot be neutral or apolitical. However, he does not want his work to be labeled as radical or anti-establishment. His paintings often explore themes of identity, societal constraints, and the emptiness of consumer culture, using bold colors to highlight the figures against textured backgrounds. This contrast enhances the sense of tension and critique in his work.
Mrinal Dey has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout his career. His notable solo exhibitions include 'Waiting In The Wings' at Ganges Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2009, 'Alice in Wonderland' at the same gallery in 2011-2012, 'Progressive' at Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi, in 2016, and 'Theatre of the Bizarre' at Gallery Beyond, Mumbai, in 2017. He has also showcased his work internationally, including at 'Art Busan' in Korea in 2017.
Dey has received several prestigious awards and scholarships for his work. These include the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant from New York in 2010, the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant from Montreal, Canada, in 2008, the China Government Scholarship in 2008, and a cash award from the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society (AIFACS) in New Delhi, India, in 2006. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions and residencies, such as the Kochi Biennale Residency Show in 2018-2019 and at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2011.
Mrinal Dey's art provides a satirical critique of modern life and consumer culture. His large, distorted figures and use of symbolic elements challenge viewers to think about the deeper social and cultural issues that shape contemporary existence.
