Madan Lal is an acclaimed contemporary artist based in Chandigarh. Raised in Ferozepur, Punjab, his creative vocabulary is deeply shaped by the rural landscapes, regional heritage, and cultural motifs of his home state. He formalised his professional training in applied arts at the Government College of Art, Chandigarh. Traditional Indian miniatures, the historical frescoes of Ajanta and Ellora, Sufism, and Buddhist philosophy all hold a powerful presence across his canvases.
His visual imagery is multi-layered and defined by a mysterious, energetic color palette derived from his various journeys. He frequently utilizes anthropomorphic figures, blending human and animal forms to explore complex emotional landscapes and the intricate dynamics of man-woman relationships. Elements of nature, dreams, fantasy, and subtle eroticism regularly emerge in his series. In addition to painting, he remains deeply passionate about drawing, filling hundreds of sketchbooks with his lines and personal poetry.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has earned prestigious accolades, including the top National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2016. He has served in vital administrative roles, notably as the honorary vice-chairman of the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi. Active participation in international art camps across London, Sweden, Turkey, and Dubai has continually expanded his artistic horizons, placing his work in prominent private and gallery collections worldwide.
