Jyoti Bhatt, born as Jyotindra Manshankar Bhatt in 1934 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, is one of India’s well-known modern artists. He is known for his work in painting, printmaking, and photography. He studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, under artists such as N. S. Bendre and K. G. Subramanyan. He later studied art and printmaking in Italy and the United States. Bhatt is especially known for his printmaking, including etchings, intaglio, and screen prints. His artworks often include elements from Indian folk and traditional art, such as peacocks, parrots, flowers, village patterns, and images of Indian gods and goddesses. His work combines traditional Indian ideas with modern artistic styles.
Photography was another important part of his artistic journey. From the late 1960s, Bhatt photographed rural Gujarat and documented traditional crafts, folk art, village life, and designs that were slowly disappearing. His photographs became an important record of India’s cultural heritage.
Bhatt was also an important figure in the Baroda School of art and worked as a teacher at M.S. University. His artworks are held in major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the British Museum in London. He received the Padma Shri in 2019 and became a Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2022.
