About Hemant Rao

Hemant Rao, born in 1984 in Raghogarh, Madhya Pradesh, is a self-taught Indian abstract artist. His journey in art began at Bharat Bhavan, a multi-arts complex in Bhopal, where he spent his formative years. Inspired by nature and the play of light and shadows, Hemant’s works are characterized by glowing abstract forms, soft pastels, and semi-transparent layers that evoke a sense of calm and serenity.

He primarily works with dry pastels, using techniques like layering to create luminous effects. His use of similar shades placed next to each other creates a soothing effect, while bright colors are added for contrast. Hemant's techniques, such as stippling for a dusty look and scratching to reveal the paper beneath, add texture and depth to his artwork. This interplay of light and texture makes some elements of his paintings appear to recede, while others seem to pop forward, creating dynamic compositions.

Despite coming from a humble rural background, Hemant’s art is modern and free from regional influences. His unique style has gained him recognition both in India and internationally. He was awarded the 60th National Academy Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2019 and received the Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for 2011–2012. He has also been honored with a State Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Hemant’s art has been showcased in several prestigious exhibitions worldwide. These include the Busan International Art Fair (2011), Seoul Art Festival (2011), Bangkok Triennale International Print & Drawing Exhibition (2014), Art Revolution Taipei (2019), and India Art Fair (2020 and 2024). At the BMW Collector's Lounge during the India Art Fair, Hemant’s neo-tantric art style reflected the brand's blend of classical elegance and modern innovation.

Through his art, Hemant Rao creates a visual language that connects the viewer to a deeper sense of tranquility while exploring the interplay of light, color, and texture. His dedication to his craft and ability to transcend cultural boundaries have made him a significant figure in contemporary Indian abstract art. He currently lives and works in Bhopal.
