Gipin Varghese is a conceptually driven visual artist who won the 2012 Emerging Artist Award, selected by an expert jury that praised his poignant use of miniature art traditions. He possesses an extensive academic background, having earned a BFA from the University of Kerala, an MFA from the University of Hyderabad, and a PhD in Fine Arts from M.G. University.
His creative practice centers on deep investigations into authority and systemic human oppression. Drawing inspiration from Indian folk mural styles, his artwork confronts dark, real-world events, including the Endosulfan pesticide crisis, military overreach under AFSPA in Manipur and Kashmir, and regional farmer suicides. Through these narratives, he critiques how humanity subjugates fellow beings to protect wealth and power, while also examining the forced control of plant and animal life cycles.
Gipin debuted his premier solo exhibition, Surveillance on the Other End of the Spectrum, at Mumbai's Sakshi Art Gallery in 2012. He has also participated in group displays at the Soorya Festival and New Delhi's AIFACS Gallery. Additionally, his scholarly research led him to author a book on Kerala's church mural history published by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi.
