About Chandra Morkonda

Chandra Morkonda, an artist from Srikalahasthi, Andhra Pradesh, was born in 1989. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from JNTU Hyderabad and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan. His art reflects vibrant colors, tribal art-inspired textures, and deep cultural and religious symbolism. The weaving traditions of his parents and the diverse cultural heritage of his hometown significantly influence his works.

Chandra’s signature style blends vivid hues and intricate patterns inspired by Indian tribal arts. His paintings often depict elements from Hindu mythology, such as the Trishul, Sri-chakram, and goddess Kali, as well as the Kalpavriksha, the mythical tree of abundance. He frequently represents nature and goddesses as semi-divine figures, drawing connections between spirituality, mythology, and nature. His inspiration also stems from sacred plants in Indian traditions, such as the neem, banyan, mango, and pipal trees, which symbolize sacredness and abundance.

Chandra employs traditional mediums like oil and acrylic paints, layering and texturing his works to achieve depth and richness. His artistic process reflects the vibrant colors and patterns he observed in his childhood, particularly from his parents' weaving. His work captures both personal memories and the cultural and religious influences of his rural upbringing.

Chandra has received several accolades, including a state award from Potti Sree Ramulu Telugu University in 2008. He has participated in numerous exhibitions across India and abroad. His solo exhibitions include Kalpavriksha (2016) and Kalpavruksha: Vahana Series (2018), both held at Forum Art Gallery, Chennai. He has also showcased his work internationally at events like Art Revolution Taipei (2019).

In addition to his solo shows, Chandra has been part of many group exhibitions, including Margazhi Musings (2017) at Forum Art Gallery, Chennai, and Hues of the Muse (2017) at Shree Yash Art Gallery, Delhi. Other notable participations include the India Art Festival (2017–2019), Potpourri at Samanvai Art Gallery, Jaipur (2018), and Devotion at ICA Gallery, Jaipur (2018). His vibrant and symbolic art resonates with themes of mythology, culture, and nature, making his work distinctive and evocative.
