About Bodhi Selvam

Bodhi Selvam, born in 1969 in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, is a self-taught artist known for his unique depictions of Buddha. Deeply inspired by the life of Siddhartha, who became Buddha through enlightenment in the 3rd century B.C., Selvam’s artwork captures the serene moment of “sambodhi” or enlightenment. Using a bamboo stick dipped in black ink, he draws Buddha through lines, dots, and curves, surrounded by natural elements that symbolize peace and calmness. His art reflects his spiritual journey and devotion to Zen philosophy, much like Buddha’s solitary path to enlightenment.

Selvam believes that Zen cannot be understood intellectually but must be experienced personally. His life is deeply intertwined with meditation, which he began practicing in 1994. Through years of introspection, he found clarity and inner peace, guiding both his life and artistic work. His paintings are not tied to traditional art movements like expressionism or impressionism but reflect his exploration of Zen spirituality. The halo around Buddha in his works represents the "roots of the universe," symbolizing the search for deeper truths beyond societal comforts.

Bodhi Selvam’s art is not about fame or labels but about sharing his insights and experiences through his paintings. His simple yet profound style reflects his deep connection with Buddhist teachings and nature. Selvam’s art narrates a journey of renunciation, inner peace, and the search for answers to life’s philosophical mysteries. He describes Zen as the guiding force in all his endeavors, making his work a blend of art and meditation.

He has exhibited his work in several solo shows, including Buddha Poornima (2016) in Muthukadu, Beyond Eight: A Journey Inwards (2022) in Bengaluru, and from Tamizh Epics to Buddhist Philosophies (2022) in Chennai. His early exhibitions date back to 1997 in Koregaon Park, India. Publications like the Sambodhi Series (2015) reflect his lifelong dedication to Buddha and Zen themes.

Selvam’s work continues to inspire viewers with its calm and thoughtful beauty. His journey as an artist mirrors Buddha’s path, as he draws not only to create art but to express his inner quest for meaning and enlightenment. Living in Chennai, Selvam remains devoted to art and meditation, following the Zen way of life.
