This dramatically textured impasto work captures the timeless spiritual essence of Varanasi’s riverfront ghats, where ascending temple spires crowned in vivid crimson pierce a clouded sky. The artist employs thick, sculptural brushwork to render architectural details and weathered steps in near-monochromatic grays and blacks, punctuated by strategic bursts of red that guide the eye from sacred flags to temple peaks to anchored boats. The heavy atmospheric treatment and palette knife technique create a dreamlike quality that honors both the weight of history and the ethereal devotion emanating from India’s holiest city.
