G. Subramanian, affectionately called 'Subra', creates luminous mixed-media artworks that blend spiritual symbolism with childlike wonder. Raised in Thandavankulam, Tamil Nadu, his creative vision was shaped by his father’s work in local theatre, instilling an early appreciation for dramatic storytelling and vivid costumes. He later formalised his training at the Government College of Arts & Crafts in Kumbakonam, graduating in 1974.
Subramanian’s signature technique involves intricate collages enriched with acrylic paint, ink washes, and textured paper layers. Influenced by art masters like Jamini Roy and K.C.S. Paniker, his compositions reimagine traditional deities—such as Krishna, Ganesha, Hanuman, and Buddha—as joyful, innocent beings. A deeply personal motif in his portfolio is the radiant image of a young girl, honoring the memory of his late daughter, Surya, whose spirit continues to shine through his art.
With a career spanning over twenty-five years, he has earned prestigious accolades, including the AIFACS Award and GCC Biennale honors. Today based in Bangalore, Subramanian’s uplifting creations are cherished in private and public art collections around the globe.
