About Amit Ambalal
Amit Ambalal, born in 1943 in Ahmedabad, was initially a businessman before becoming a full-time artist in 1979. His passion for painting began in childhood, inspired by his mother, who learned art from the renowned artist Chhaganlal Jadav. Despite his artistic interest, Ambalal was expected to follow his family’s business. He earned degrees in BA, B.Com., and LL.B. from Ahmedabad University and later became the Managing Director of the family business. However, even while managing the company, he devoted Sundays to painting with his mentor, Jadav.
In 1977, driven by his childhood dream of becoming a painter, Ambalal sold his business and fully embraced art. His first solo exhibition was held in 1980 at the Hutheesing Visual Arts Centre, Ahmedabad. Over the years, he has showcased his work across India and internationally, with solo exhibitions in galleries like Sakshi Gallery in Mumbai, Bodhi Art in New Delhi and Singapore, and Gallery Maya in London. He has also participated in numerous group shows worldwide.
Ambalal’s art explores the intersection of tradition and contemporary themes, often using humor and satire. He draws inspiration from popular religious traditions, particularly the devotional art of Nathdwara in Rajasthan, blending it with modern interpretations. His work also reflects on human behavior, society’s contradictions, and the coexistence of wealth and poverty. Through irony and sharp observation, he portrays the quirks and flaws of everyday life, creating paintings that are both light-hearted and thought-provoking.
Ambalal works mainly with watercolors, which he prefers for their luminosity and transparency. He enjoys the spontaneous blending of colors on paper, letting them evolve naturally instead of mixing them on a palette. His creative process is organic—he doesn’t plan his paintings but allows the artwork to develop as he paints, often inspired by everyday images like newspaper photos or antique sculptures.
Throughout his career, Ambalal has earned several prestigious awards, including the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1968 and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship in Italy in 1999. Despite his achievements and more than 40 exhibitions, he remains humble, describing himself as a lifelong student of art, always eager to learn and improve.
Amit Ambalal continues to live and work in Ahmedabad, bringing his unique blend of humor, tradition, and contemporary insight to the canvas. His art offers a playful yet profound commentary on both the sacred and the ordinary, resonating with viewers through its authenticity and vivid storytelling.
