Abhishek Narayan Verma is a contemporary visual artist who uses a blend of painting and printmaking to explore the complexities of modern life. Born in 1990 in Guthani, Bihar, his academic journey took him from the College of Art in New Delhi to the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he refined his skills in printmaking. Today, he lives and works in Vadodara, a city known for its rich artistic community.
Verma’s work is deeply observational, drawing inspiration from the friction between the individual and a demanding, ever-changing society. He focuses on themes like social conditioning, memory, and the "dysfunctionality" of human interactions. His characters often find themselves in absurd or surreal situations that reflect inner anxieties and personal insecurities. By playing with sharp contrasts and subtle details, he creates an investigative atmosphere on his canvases, essentially asking "what if" through his imagery.
His talent has been recognized both in India and abroad. In 2014, he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture, and in 2019, he received the prestigious Jean-Claude Reynal Scholarship from France. This international recognition led to a notable solo exhibition at the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux. More recently, his 2023 exhibition "May I Have Your A-Tension, Please?" in New Delhi showcased his ability to capture the mental state of the modern idler. Through his prints and drawings, Verma continues to document the quiet, often overlooked tensions of the human experience, making him a compelling voice in the Indian art scene.
